An Inclusive Reading of 2nd Corinthians, Chapter 8
by Kimi Floyd Reisch, written in 2021, adapted in 2023 for Easter 2024.
Giggling is one of the few human acts that is entirely spontaneous. Some people giggle when they are happy. Others only when they are uncomfortable. Finally, some only when they forget that they are too old, too proper, or too adult to let go and spontaneously giggle with every emotion felt by humans.
The Divine Beloved’s love is like a giggle, flowing through us and bringing purpose and blessings to our lives. When we hear that giggle, it is like that of a child – so perfect and beautiful that you cannot help but smile, and even giggle along.
We often hear the giggle of the divine presence in the rustle through the leaves of a forest or in the falling patter of the rain, but if we listen deeply we can also hear it in other places.
A divine community’s giggle has the power to calm hearts committed to war.
A radically inclusive and loving giggle can be loud, but it can also be quiet and soft as it pulls us and directs us. In Jesus, we witnessed the power of following a giggle to stand and hope and love each other. Some are not there yet. The noise of the world prevents hearing that divine giggle of hope.
We walk together in truth, aligned with siblings around the world, companions in justice, advocates for inclusive love. We follow the considerate and the compassionate witness of others who walked this path before. We want more friends to join us, until the entire world lives listening always for that giggle, waiting for it to call us into community like the supper whistles that used to call folks home. We can’t wait until you hear it and giggle with us.
